So, on October 9, after borrowing our friends’ car top carrier (huge thanks for that traveling luxury!), we loaded up the car and headed out on the open road…and…
What will we remember from this trip?:
1) It’s possible to leave 3.5 hours later than planned when one gets 20 miles from home and realizes he has no wallet, then has to buy a blanket for freezing/crying little girl, finds the car on empty from wife running around doing pre-trip errands for a week previous, and he realizes two mini-donuts for breakfast just isn’t going to cut it and has to hit McD’s for a Sausage McMuffin.
2) Driving 40 minutes up/down steep/drop-off canyon roads (San Diego has canyons??) to reach the Marriott resort we stayed at…that got a little old, but we did enjoy the pool twenty feet from our door.
3) Visiting Disneyland on the most slammed day we have ever been in the park…but seeing it all decked out for Halloween (especially the Haunted House and Space Mountain) was a pretty great treat! (It even made up for the 2 hour drive back up that darn canyon road at 1:00 in the morning.) Oh, and lest I forget: Connor getting to take two turns on Autotopia because he thought the guy waved him on for a second time (uh, he actually wanted Connor to back up, not take off!) Good chuckle...
4) Dressing up my four gorgeous children, dragging them to La Jolla Cove beach and making them mug for the camera for two hours amidst the barking seals hanging out on the rocks…seriously cool for Mom, seriously a drag for the wee ones…no worries, we made it up to them with dinner at the infamous Anthony’s Fish Grotto (the very restaurant where I learned to eat seafood at age 11!) Connor had his first shrimp entrée and Tash loved her specialty drink complete with seahorse stirring stick.
5) Watching Connor and Dane brave the Pacific Ocean without a worry in the world that the sun was nowhere to be found.
6) Outdoor dining with a huge heater and yummy Mexican food at Casa de Reyes in Old Town San Diego…as soon as the mariachi band began to play, Fynn jumped into the aisle and started dancing. They treated her to her own personal dance request of “It’s a Small World” (my heart won’t soon forget the joy on my baby’s face as she twirled…so precious!)
7) The ghost town that was Sea World by the end of the day…we loved it! The new dolphin show was awesome and the kids LOVED checking out the sea life.
8) Buy a new compact camera because this one is awful! These pics make me cringe...
9) It was our first ever Shayne and Leslee Keckley family vacation sans relatives…a new adventure for us and we loved it! The kids said it was one of their best vacations ever…can’t ask for more than that, right??
