Girls On Film...

One of the many keys to sanity of the Stay-At-Home-Mom? Girls' Night Out!! I have a fantastic group of ladies that make me laugh, make me think, let me be silly, they inspire, they share...And, they all LOVE dessert as much as I do (okay, not really sure that's possible...except maybe for Jessica! Don't be mad girl, you know it's true...) We get together about every 6 weeks (ever try to coordinate 7 people's full-of-little-people-and-a-husband schedules...nightmare!) and go out to some restaurant, cafe or bakery and just chill together.

Last Thursday, we went to this swanky, SoHo-wanna-be place called SPARK and had the most delicious rosemary fries and fruit drinks (non-alcoholic of course!) We finished the night at Coffee Bean bakery with some yummalicious cupcakes. It was tons of fun. I look forward to these nights a lot...thanks, ladies (Kristi, Marisa, Emily, Jessica and Mary...oh, and Emily who hadn't shown up yet when the waiter snapped this pic!)

The Incredible, Edible Egg...

It's a good thing Grammy Su and Grandpa Bar provide a fabulous Easter egg hunt every year, because I find myself getting lazier and lazier in "doing Easter" as the years go by! This year, we skipped the egg-dying all together (much to the kids' chagrin) and didn't even get to sport our new Easter clothes at church since it was General Conference weekend. I'm not going to complain about getting to stay in my pjs most of the day, however! We had a blast enjoying dinner with our grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins and the rain held off long enough for the kiddos to search for all the lovely eggs the grandpas had hidden. The kids adore cracking them open and seeing what treasures lie within! (And, yes, I know I'm lame to not have brought their Easter baskets for the hunt, but, hey, a Day's grocery sack is just as functional, right? And one more thing...boy, did we miss our other cousins not being there...maybe next year!)

The Easter Bunny loot (with messages to the varmit posted on the fireplace!)
(I absolutely adore this pic--that belly is too cute)

Lead Kindly Light...

Sacrament meeting began today with an announcement I surely wasn't expecting to hear: a lovely woman in every sense, Sister Jan Levie, had unexpectedly passed away over the weekend. I was shocked...and saddened..and honored to have known her for a short time. It wasn't that Sister Jan and I were close friends. In fact, we didn't often speak. But, over the last couple of years, the few times that we did interact were very significant and meaningful to me.
When I was called to be a teacher in Relief Society almost two years ago, I was ecstatic! I know others would rather do many a desperate thing than stand up in front of a group and teach gospel doctrine, sharing thoughts from their homes, heads and hearts. But I adore it. I LOVE to teach, always have. It's why I chose the career I did as young college student. I love the feeling of looking out over a sea of faces, some with smiles, some with fierce concentration...some even in tears, as you make a connection for just that one moment over a topic, a thought, an emotion. And this is most importantly why I will miss sweet Jan.
As I began teaching every few Sundays, I would look over the cast of women sitting in that room and read many things in the faces staring back at me. I might have been right in my assessments, I might have been wrong. But, nonetheless, I always assessed when I taught: am I expressing this thought just right? Am I teaching what the Lord wants? Am I preaching correct doctrine? Am I talking too much and not letting others share what is in their hearts? It's always a teaching tightrope one walks when daring to stand up and share...
I am sort of intimidated by the older women in my ward...not totally, but sort of. I know they have a lot of years of experience on me. I know they have wisdom I don't yet possess. And, yet, I am confident in my ability to draw from my own intellect, my own experiences and the overwhelming influence of the Spirit to guide me in my calling. And, in that, I have no intimidation. But, still...sometimes I read on those faces this look: "Poor dear, she doesn't really know what she's talking about. Maybe someday..." It might be in my imagination...it might not. Either way, there are always those few faces I search out in the audience each time I teach--the women I know will reflect to me the "right" expressions to propel me forward: the ones with smiles, a rising hand, a look of understanding...and approval. For me, Jan Levie was one of these faces.
No matter what lesson I gave, Jan would look at me with those soft, incredibly wise eyes, and no nonsense salt-and-pepper haircut and give me a wink, or a smile, or a constant nod of her head. And with it came immediate confidence to keep talking, immediate courage to share my thoughts, immediate feeling of love from one elder sister to one younger...and still growing....
She often shared her affinity for what I offered to her. She cried when I sang and told me how much it touched her, she hugged me and told me I wasn't ever going to top THAT lesson, she held my hand and said I'd made a difference in her life. Well, Jan, let me express to you, YOU have made a difference in mine. I love your phenomenal example of selflessness, wisdom to see life as it is with no frills necessary, and willingness to befriend any and all. You were a rare woman...and I will miss your smile, your encouragement, and your presence in my life...may God be with you 'til we meet again...

This Is The Dawning Of The Age Of Aquarius..er,uh, Aquarium!

It pains the photographer in me to post these pics (and that goes for the NYC pics as well)! Because my "real" camera is such a beast to lug around, I resorted to using my fits-in-the-purse camera that is years old to take all these photos. (And a dark aquarium does not equal good shots!) Nevertheless, I figure some documentation of "been there" is better than none! (But, sheesh, that lighting and soft focus is just killing me!)
Grammy Su called Thursday morning and wanted to know what fun activity I was going to do with the kids for their spring break this week...uh, that'd be none. So, Grammy said she'd love to take the kids to the aquarium in Sandy to check out the water life. I have to admit, I think it's crazy that we have one of those here in, uh, the desert! But, the kids loved checking out all the fish and crazy sea creatures, pretending to drive a boat, watching the penguins be fed, and shaking hands with the rays (ooh, they are velvety!) Okay, only the two older ones would touch them...Fynn was freaking out and refusing. Thanks so much, Grammy, for a fun day out together!

I'm Not Gonna Write You A Love Song, 'Cause You Ask For It...

But she might just write you a novel or two! The 6th-grade wax museum assignment...ah, it was a process for dear Natasha (and a bit for Mom, too!) Tash was assigned Louisa May Alcott as her historical figure and set about writing a great report on her life and works. One trip to Grammy Su's for the perfect dress dug out of the costume box, a couple of cool accessories to "set the mood", a memorized monologue and voila! Those 6th-graders are sure darn cute!
